POEMS syndrome is a blood disorder that damages the nerves and affects other parts of the body. POEMS stands for the symptoms of the condition. Symptoms may include weakness in the legs, shortness of breath, an increased size of the spleen or of the liver, and changes in the skin.

Without treatment, POEMS syndrome gets worse quickly. It can be fatal. So the early diagnosis is vital.

There is No cure for POEMS syndrome. But treatment can improve symptoms. The treatment may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation. The prognosis for people with POEMS syndrome has improved a lot in recent years.

Symptoms

The symptoms of POEMS syndrome make up your name. The symptoms most often appear in the course of weeks to months. These include the following:

  • Polyneuropathy. This can include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the legs. At the time, it could affect the hands. It also involves difficulty breathing. Polyneuropathy must be present for a POEMS of diagnosis.
  • Organomegaly. This is an enlargement of the spleen, liver or lymph nodes.
  • Endocrinopathy and edema. Atypical levels of the hormone can cause an underactive thyroid, also called hypothyroidism. Hormone levels can also cause diabetes, sexual problems, fatigue, and swelling in the arms and legs.

Causes

The experts don't know the cause of POEMS syndrome. But people with POEMS syndrome have an increased number of plasma cells. These cells make too much of a type of protein called a monoclonal protein. This protein can damage other parts of the body.

Risk factors

The factors that increase the risk of POEMS syndrome are:

  • Advanced age. POEMS syndrome occurs most often after the age of 50 years old.
  • The male sex. The people who are assigned male at birth are a little more prone to getting POEMS down syndrome who are people assigned female at birth.
